Follow-Up: Ubersleep

As you may recall, I posted awhile back on Nick Busey who was then already seven days into his polyphasic sleep schedule experiment. Quick PS 101: You don’t sleep, you nap. The idea being that through sleep deprivation, you’ll enter REM sleep much faster, skipping the sleep phases that are not crucial to your survival. Proponents say through PS they feel more alert and, with only 2-5 sleeping hours, un-debatably have more awake time.

16 days. That’s how long Nick managed to, more or less, keep to his sleep schedule.

Some of the highlights:

Nick’s site was receiving under 100 hits a day until day five of the experiment when links to his blog were posted on Digg.com and Hackaday.com. His blog then jumped to over 8,000 unique visitors. One has to imagine that we will be seeing viral marketing happening this way in the not too distant future where bloggers like Nick are plants subtly selling us on some product or another.

He overslept here and there.

Frankly, I think that he could have done a lot more with this blog. Since he gave up about 8 days ago, he has yet to post any sort of follow up or conclusion. Most of his postings logged only loosely the amount of time he spent napping. And rarely does he provide much insight into how this whole thing is making him feel. If it made him more alert, he didn’t seem to apply this alertness towards making his postings more informative.

Sleep tight Nick.
